5 WiFi Hacks for super speedy Internet

WiFi_Hacks

Everyone knows the feeling. You sit down to your favourite series on Netflix, popcorn at the ready and all of a sudden... buffering. Continual buffering. It’s the absolute worst but luckily for you, totally fixable.

Slow WiFi is a bugbear everyone has come across at some point in their life but we have some hacks, that are easy to carry out, that will have you bingeing your favourite series in no time. Here are our top 5 hacks to improve your slow WiFi connection.

Hack 1: Move your router/modem out of the cupboard or enclosed ceiling

Popping your modem or router up onto a desk or bench, away from wet areas, will allow it to breathe and will stop
your unit from overheating. We know that routers aren’t the most aesthetically pleasing item but having the router tucked away isn’t going to produce the best WiFi signal. Check the position of your modem also. Having the modem in a central location around your home will also improve your signal. And please don’t position your router behind

another electrical appliance such as your television or computer as this could interfere with your signal.

Hack 2: Update your firmware

If you are experiencing performance issues and your router is on the newer side, updating the network driver and the firmware on your device is an easy solution toward getting your internet connection back on track. Go to your settings and check that your firmware is up to date. This will ensure things run along smoothly.

Hack 3: While you’re updating your firmware, check your unit’s speed

This will notify you if things aren’t up to scratch. And it’s easy to do if you have an ethernet cable on hand. Simply follow these steps;

  • Connect your computer to your internet modem or router using an ethernet cable.

  • Open your web browser and navigate to www.speedtest.net or similar.

  • Tap “Go.” and wait for the results.

Hack 4: Change the channel

Wireless routers can operate on a number of channels and assigning a fixed channel for each of your devices can really speed things along. Selecting the proper WiFi channel can significantly improve your WiFi coverage and performance.

Use a WiFi Analyzer on your computer to locate the right channel for you, then log into your router to change the channel on your WiFi bands.

Hack 5: Check your frequency. The higher, the better

A simple solution is switching the frequency of your router from 2.4 GHz to

5 GHz. This quick and easy hack could just be what you need to increase your internet speed dramatically.

If all 5 hacks fail, it may be time for a new modem / router. Especially if you’ve had your unit for a number of years. But if you have a brand spanking new router and are still experiencing issues then it’s time to call in the professionals aka, Curtis Contracts.
